the therapy process with us
A course of treatment begins with an initial assessment session, where the client describes their problem, background, and what they hope to gain from therapy. Self-assessment questionnaires are often used to explore the client’s symptoms. These questionnaires are tools that support the diagnostic process.
Sometimes one assessment session is enough, and sometimes several are needed. During the assessment phase, a behavioural analysis and case conceptualisation are carried out. This involves examining the client’s history, core beliefs, life rules, negative automatic thoughts, and behavioural excesses and deficits.
Understand behavioural patterns
Situational analyses are used to understand the client’s behavioural patterns. Once this is completed, treatment begins using evidence-based methods aimed at reducing psychological distress and achieving the client’s goals. A problem hierarchy is often established, starting with the most pressing issues.
Setting goals is valuable, as it provides a clear thread throughout the therapy process. Naturally, new issues may arise along the way. Homework assignments are sometimes used to encourage change between sessions, with tasks for the client to work on in everyday life.
Duration of therapy
The duration of therapy varies – from a few sessions to long-term therapy lasting several years – depending on the nature of the issue, the treatment approach, and the client’s preferences. Sessions are 45 minutes long, although double sessions can be booked if desired. Meetings are usually more frequent at the start and gradually become less frequent. Frequency can range from twice weekly to once every two months. The most common is once a week, every other week, or every third week.
Therapy is equally effective whether held in person at the clinic or remotely via video link (online), phone, or chat. We offer therapy at our clinics in London.
